The first championship round semi-final at this year's CIAU Final 8 pitted
the 2nd-seeded Bishop's Gaiters against the 3rd-seeded Victoria Vikings.
The Gaiters advanced to the game by virtue of a victory Friday over the
Alberta Golden Bears, while the Vikes downed the Brandon Bobcats.
In a thriller between two great teams, the Gaiters edged the Vikings
78-76.
The Vikes held the upper hand for most of the first half, leading 28-24
with about 5 minutes to play. But the Gaiters went on a 13-1 run, led by
the hot outside shooting of point guard Ryan Thorne, to take a 37-29
advantage. By the half, Bishop's had a 41-38 lead.
Patrice Lemieux led all scorers with 13 in the opening 20 minutes. Thorne
had 10 points and 5 assists. Aaron Olson was tops for UVic with 12
points, while Colin Martin contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds. All
Canadian Eric Hinrichsen was only able to attempt 4 shots in the half,
thanks to great interior defense from the Gaiters.
The Quebec champs opened the second half with a 10-1 run, to take a lead
of 51-39. The Vikes did not get their first field goal until the 16:07
mark. The squads traded hoops for the next 4 minutes, until the defending
champion Vikings scored 4 to come to within 6 (61-55) with 11:23
remaining.
A timeout seemed to inspire Bishop's, who again built the lead to double
digits. But the Vikes were not going to give up their crown without a
fight. Hinrichsen started to assert himself in the paint, but for every
good offensive series from the Vikes, the Gaiters answered. With 6:19 on
the clock, Bishop's held a 70-62 lead.
Olson connected from beyond the arc to cut the advantage to 5, and
following a Bishop's basket, Donnie Fitzpatrick drained another long range
bomb, and it was a 72-68 contest. Hinrichsen muscled in a hoop, to make
it 72-70, with 3:28 remaining.
After Colin Martin scored to knot the game, he jammed one home to give
Victoria their first lead since early on, 74-72. Stewart Clark made 1-2
from the line for the Gaitors, and the teams traded baskets to head into
the final minute with UVic up 76-75. Bishop's forced a miss, but couldn't
convert at the offensive end. The Vikes took a timeout with 20 ticks
remaining, up a single point.
With 14.3 seconds on the clock, Colin Martin was fouled, and went to the
line with a 1 and 1. The Gaiters grabbed the missed front end of the free
throw, and completed a fantastic transition hoop, ending with Stewart
Clark hitting a layup, while being fouled, with 4.3 left. He completed
the 3-point play. The Vikes quickly got the ball up to Hinrichsen at
mid-court, but his pass was intercepted by Southward to seal the win.
Patrice Lemieux was named the Player of the Game. He scored 25 points on
the evening. Hinrichsen led Victoria with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
